Towards greater convergence in European immunisation policy and decision-making
Health-service organisation is a national competency, but vaccine-preventable disease does not respect borders. Greater European alignment on adult immunisation calendars and decision-making could deliver significant public-health gains.
Why this matters
MBVE sets out where alignment is feasible, what it would require and what it would deliver. A core European calendar for adult immunisation, and stronger, more consistent decision-making pathways would benefit public health and increase vaccine confidence.
Key issues
- Fragmentation of adult immunisation calendars across EU member states
- Gaps in national immunisation decision-making structures, where advisory groups are absent or underpowered
- The opportunity for a European core adult immunisation calendar
- The role of European institutions (ECDC, EMA, European Commission) in facilitating alignment
What the Consensus Report recommends
Policy-grade recommendations for action at European and national level.
Develop a more aligned approach to life-course immunisation through a core calendar for adult immunisation.
Address key gaps in decision-making pathways on immunisation to enhance their consistency, inclusivity, transparency and accountability.
Who contributes to this pillar
This policy-operational pillar draws on the Federation of European Academies of Medicine and national public-health bodies among the Board’s members, whose recommendations are directed at European institutions and member states.
